Membership

Membership of The Christchurch Club guarantees privacy in a ‘home away from home’ environment in our historic Clubhouse. The Club has a distinguished past and is building a distinguished future by the depth of its membership, offering the opportunity to mix with other like-minded members.

Members are entitled to the full use of the facilities, including the dining rooms, bars, lounges, meeting rooms, billiards room, squash court, gymnasium and conference and function facilities. 

There is a stimulating programme of special events designed to inform and entertain members and their guests.

Convenient complimentary secure car parking is provided adjacent to the Clubhouse.

Accommodation is available in the Clubhouse.

Currently there are over 100 reciprocal clubs throughout the world and as a Member you are able to use their facilities as your own.

Ordinary Members

Those residing not more than 50 kilometres by the shortest normally available road from the Clubhouse.

Country Members

Those residing more than 50 kilometres by the shortest normally available road from the Clubhouse but within that part of the Canterbury Land District, south of the Conway River and north of the Rangitata River.

Extra-Provincial Members

Those residing elsewhere in New Zealand.

Junior Members

Those under the age of 40 years at the date of admission. Entitlement to Junior membership shall cease on attaining the age of 40 years.

Overseas Members

Those who in the opinion of the Committee are residing outside New Zealand, but have satisfied the relevant residential criteria for at least six months immediately preceding the date of nomination.

Senior Members

Those who are aged 65 years or over and who have been Members (other than Companion Members) of any category and paid subscriptions (other than Companion Membership Subscriptions) for 25 years or more, whether consecutive or otherwise.

Life Members

Those who have been Members in any of the foregoing categories for an aggregate of 50 years.
Honorary Life Members – those so elected by an Annual General Meeting on the recommendation of the Committee in recognition of outstanding service to the Community or the Club

Companion Members

The wife or husband of a Member; (other than a Companion Member). A widow or widower of a person who was a Member (other than a Companion Member) at the time of death. Or upon application being made to the Committee, the wife or husband of a former Member (other than a Companion Member) who, in the opinion of the Committee, has ceased to be a Member because of physical or mental incapacity.

Dress Code


Members and their guests are required to observe the dress code whenever they are in the Club. Smart casual attire is permitted in all areas of the Club. It is expected that Members will use their good judgement and exercise discretion to ensure that they and their guests are dressed in keeping with good taste and the proper decorum of the Club.

Smart casual attire for men means shirts with collars (tie is preferred in some areas) and sleeves or turtleneck sweaters and tailored trousers. 
Not permitted are jeans or denim, collarless shirts, hiking style boots, running shoes or sandals (except when accessing the accommodation areas).

Smart casual attire for women means shirts with collars or blouses, collarless shirts with jackets and tailored slacks or skirts. Sleeveless summer dresses are permitted. Again, not permitted are jeans or denim, hiking style boots or running shoes (except when accessing the accommodation areas).

Member/Guest Conduct

• Mobile phones must be turned off when in the Clubhouse.

• No Member or guest shall give any money or gratuity to any employee of the Club, however they may place a donation in the Staff Fund box in the Hall.

• Any Member or guest breaking or damaging any Club property shall replace the same or pay the cost thereof to the Club.

• Business discussions, papers or documents of a business nature should not be displayed by Members or guests in any areas of the Club with the exception of the designated private rooms.

• Smoking is not permitted in the Clubhouse.

• No Member or guest shall bring into the Clubhouse any pets, with the exception of a registered guide dog for the blind.

Membership is only through nomination by existing members.

Applicants for membership shall be proposed by a Member (of at least five years) on an application form providing all of the details required by the Membership Sub-Committee including the consent of the applicant.

The application shall be supported in writing by two additional Members (other than a Companion Member).

The completed nomination form should be returned the Club General Manager or a member of the Committee.

Each application is reviewed by the Membership sub-committee and then forwarded to the main Committee. If the Committee’s view is favourable, the application is then posted in the Clubhouse for approval of the membership for a period of 21 days. The application will then go to the following Committee meeting for approval.
